Tips for a Healthy Memorial Day

Tips for a Healthy Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend is typically the start of the summer season – pool parties, BBQs, and vacations are on the horizon . . . and often times, that means a few more cocktails and a lot more eating.

Memorial Day is set aside to honor America’s fallen heroes with family and friends. No matter how you celebrate, keep it healthy while still enjoying all the fun of summer. Kick off the Memorial Day weekend with healthy habits that will keep you energized and looking good in that new bathing suit all summer long.

Be Conscious of What You’re Eating

It may be a holiday weekend, but don’t use it as an excuse to make bad food choices. Make mindful selections, and try to eat clean. Fill up on fruits, vegetables and lean meats so you have less room for junk food. Skip dishes made with white sugar. Instead, if you’re attending a barbecue at a friend’s home, bring a dessert made with stevia.

Do Something Active

Don’t sit on the couch or on the lawn chair all weekend long. Move your body! Playing outdoor games like basketball or tennis is good for your health and will help you burn off some of those extra holiday calories. If it’s warm enough, go for a swim or walk around the block.

Stay Hydrated

Be careful not to become dehydrated on hot summer afternoons. Drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids and stay cool, especially if you’ve been particularly active. If you’ll be indulging in a cocktail or two, drink responsibility and make sure to drink an extra glass of water since alcohol can cause dehydration.
